DAIRY FARM MANAGEMENT
This internship is a 12-month position in dairy science or animal science. The goal of this program is to improve technical skills and knowledge of dairy farm management. The valuable on-farm experience and dairy management skills acquired through this internship makes it an ideal transition between college and a career in the dairy industry.
QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s or Associate degree in dairy or animal science or related field.

Ability to work with others under supervision of the Dairy Farm Manager and Herdsmen.
-
Interest in hands-on experience in dairy farm management and herdsperson training.
-
Eagerness to learn and ability to work hard and cooperate with others. The intern works closely with the herdsmen and farm manager, as well as other farm staff: feeders, calf manager, milkers and crops staff. The intern also works alongside undergraduate college students participating in semester-long programs throughout the year.
RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Ability to perform a variety of tasks in dairy management including: assisting with calving, fresh cow care, vaccination, and diagnosing and treating sick animals.

Use management software including DairyComp 305 and AI 24 to help with heat detection and reproductive management.

Work with veterinarian and nutritionist and learn about labor management on the farm.

EQUINE MANAGEMENT
This internship is a 12-month position for college graduates. The goal of this program is to improve technical skills and knowledge of equine management to better prepare the intern for a career in the horse industry.
QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in animal or equine science.

Ability to work with others under supervision of the Equine Manager.

Ability to perform a variety of tasks in stable management including being able to lift 50lbs, proficient horse handling skills, intermediate riding abilities.

Willingness to learn and be part of the overall Miner Institute team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Perform assigned duties including, but not limited to, daily care of the Morgan Horse herd and related facilities.

Interact as needed with Summer Experience in Equine Management students, including training and supervision.

Assist as needed in equine research and education projects conducted with the Miner Institute horse herd.

Attend equine-related seminars as work schedule permits for professional development.

Author articles for The Stable Sheet newsletter.

AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH
This internship is a 12-month position in agricultural research. The goal of this program is to develop research skills in areas such as nutrient management, dairy cattle nutrition, agronomy, reproductive physiology of dairy cattle and horses, and dairy cattle behavior.
QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in animal or dairy science.

Ability to work with others under supervision of the Director of Research and Research Scientists.

Ability to lift 50 lbs.
-
Willingness to learn and be part of the overall Miner Institute team and adhere to research protocols.
-
Strong communication skills and ability to interact cooperatively with coworkers.
-
Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing priorities of a research institute.
RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Work experience in the dairy research facility will include feeding cows/heifers/calves for individual feed intakes, milk sampling, urine/fecal sampling, blood sampling, caring for ruminally-cannulated cows and assessing dairy cattle behavior.

Interact as needed with Advanced Dairy Management and Summer Experience in Agricultural Research students, including training and mentoring.

Ability to attend lectures and workshops offered at Miner Institute and scientific meetings.

Author articles for the monthly Farm Report newsletter.
