WELCOME, ABBY!

Hello everyone! My name is Abby Allen, and I am a new graduate student joining Miner Institute. I grew up in southern New Hampshire and recently graduated from the University of Findlay (UF) in Ohio with Bachelor of Science degrees in Animal Science, Equine Business Management, Western Equestrian Studies, and a minor in Chemistry.

Looking back on my childhood, the farming community has always played an integral role in my life. My love for cattle grew (particularly the Holstein and Milking Shorthorn breeds) as I spent time feeding calves and milking for a family friend’s dairy farm and raising my own 4-H Working Steer projects. I was always a naturally inquisitive kid, asking why things worked the way they did and what we could do to improve them–this nature ultimately leading me to where I am today.

These early experiences sparked my interest in understanding how we can improve the dairy industry on a deeper level and wanting to help solve problems producers face on a daily basis. In high school I discovered my love for horses through the ranch riding discipline, and later rode for UF’s Ranch Horse Team, which continues to be a major part of my life today.

Throughout my undergraduate career, I had the opportunity to work across multiple areas of the agricultural industry, including a Standardbred breeding farm learning the reproductive, sales, and office side of the harness industry and a large-scale dairy farm learning both the communications and management side of the farm. These experiences, along with opportunities to attend industry conferences such as Tri-State and American Dairy Science Association Annual Meeting, and learning from shadowing nutritionists and consultants, helped further shape my passion in dairy production and research.

My primary interest lies in dairy calf and heifer development, particularly in how optimizing early-life nutrition and management systems influences rumen development, growth efficiency, and long-term productivity. I hope to help find economically practical strategies that can be implemented on farm to improve calf performance and overall herd success.

I am excited to be back in the Northeast and to continue learning how regional systems and management approaches influence dairy production. Outside of work, I enjoy riding horses, spending time at the beach or in the mountains, and canning veggies & fruits. I’m looking forward to working with the team at Miner and connecting with producers and industry professionals across the region.
