SOYBEAN MEAL OR CANOLA MEAL? WHICH PROTEIN SOURCE FITS YOUR DAIRY RATION BEST?

Protein supplements represent one of the largest feed costs on most dairy farms, making ingredient selection critical for both animal performance and profitability. Soybean meal has long been considered the benchmark protein supplement because of its high crude protein (CP) content and excellent digestibility. However, canola meal has become increasingly available throughout the Northeast and often provides a more economical source of metabolizable protein.


To better understand how these ingredients compare under current market conditions, we analyzed soybean meal and conventional canola meal collected from commercial feed suppliers in northeastern New York. Rather than relying solely on book values, these analyses represent feeds currently available to producers in the region.


Soybean meal supplies more protein—but not necessarily more bypass protein

The soybean meal analyzed contained 51.8% CP, compared with 43.3% CP for canola meal, approximately 20% more total protein. Soybean meal also contained more soluble protein (11.7 vs. 7.1% of DM), allowing nitrogen to become rapidly available in the rumen following feeding.


This rapid availability translated into substantially greater ruminally degradable protein (RDP). Soybean meal supplied 32.4% RDP (DM basis) compared with 20.2% for canola meal. Expressed relative to total protein, 62.5% of soybean meal CP was ruminally degradable compared with only 46.7% for canola meal. While this characteristic is advantageous when rumen microbes require additional nitrogen, it also means less protein escapes the rumen.

In contrast, canola meal provided considerably more ruminally undegradable protein (RUP), containing 23.1% RUP (DM basis) compared with 19.4% for soybean meal. On a CP basis, 53.4% of canola meal protein escaped ruminal degradation, whereas only 37.5% of soybean meal protein reached the intestine undegraded.


For high-producing dairy cows, particularly during early lactation when metabolizable protein requirements are greatest, this additional bypass protein can be nutritionally valuable.


Both ingredients deliver highly digestible protein

Despite these differences in ruminal degradation, both feeds ultimately provided highly digestible protein. Intestinally digestible protein was remarkably similar, averaging 16.3% of DM for canola meal and 15.4% for soybean meal. Although soybean meal had greater intestinal digestibility of the RUP fraction (79.2 vs. 70.5% of RUP), canola meal compensated by delivering more protein to the small intestine in the first place.


Overall, total tract digestible protein reached 47.7% of DM for soybean meal compared with 36.5% for canola meal, primarily reflecting soybean meal's greater CP concentration rather than differences in protein quality.


Canola meal contributes much more fiber

One of the largest nutritional differences between these ingredients is fiber. Canola meal contained 27.6% aNDFom, more than three times the fiber concentration of soybean meal (7.8%). Likewise, acid detergent fiber (ADF) was 18.8% for canola meal compared with only 5.5% for soybean meal.


Although soybean meal exhibited higher NDF digestibility after 48 hours (75.5 vs. 52.9%), this comparison should be interpreted carefully because soybean meal contributes very little fiber to the ration. In practical terms, canola meal supplies substantially more digestible non-forage fiber, making it a useful ingredient when additional dietary fiber is needed without sacrificing protein supply. This characteristic can be particularly valuable in diets containing high levels of corn silage or rapidly fermentable starch where additional non-forage fiber may improve rumen function.


Soybean meal provides more energy

Soybean meal also contained greater concentrations of non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC), averaging 31.7% compared with 19.2% for canola meal. Combined with its higher CP concentration and greater fiber digestibility, soybean meal achieved an estimated TDN of 82.2%, substantially greater than the 65.4% observed for canola meal. Canola meal, however, contained nearly twice as much fat (3.7 vs. 2.0%), contributing modestly to dietary energy while remaining well below concentrations likely to negatively affect ruminal fermentation.


Fiber degradation matters

Our fiber degradation analysis revealed another important distinction. Although canola meal contains considerably more fiber, most of its digestible NDF belongs to the slow degradation pool, resulting in a more sustained release of fermentable fiber throughout the day. Soybean meal, despite its small fiber fraction, also exhibited predominantly slow fiber degradation but contained a much smaller indigestible NDF fraction. These differences suggest that canola meal may better complement diets already containing rapidly fermentable carbohydrates by providing a slower, more continuous source of fermentable fiber.


Bottom line

Neither ingredient is universally superior—they simply fill different nutritional roles.


Soybean meal remains an excellent choice when the goal is maximizing dietary energy and rapidly available ruminal nitrogen. Its higher CP (51.8%), greater RDP (62.5% of CP), higher NFC (31.7%), and greater TDN (82.2%) make it particularly attractive for supporting microbial protein synthesis when fermentable carbohydrates are abundant.


Canola meal, on the other hand, offers distinct advantages for cows that require more metabolizable protein. Compared with soybean meal, it supplies 42% more RUP on a DM basis (23.1 vs. 19.4%), nearly three times more fiber, and substantially more non-forage NDF while maintaining excellent intestinal protein digestibility.


Ultimately, the choice between soybean meal and canola meal should be based on the nutritional needs of the ration rather than CP concentration alone. When dietary metabolizable protein or non-forage fiber limits performance, canola meal can be an excellent alternative. When energy density and rapidly available ruminal nitrogen are the primary objectives, soybean meal remains one of the best protein supplements available.


Take-home message: Modern dairy ration formulation extends well beyond crude protein. Evaluating protein fractions (RDP and RUP), intestinal digestibility, fiber concentration, and fiber degradation characteristics provides a much more complete picture of how each protein supplement will perform in the rumen and ultimately support milk production.
