ses at
a stable in <st1:State w:st=3D"on"><st1:place w:st=3D"on">Tennessee</st1:pl=
ace></st1:State>
have recently died as a result of Botulism; it serves as a painful reminder=
 to
watch your feed carefully. Botulism in horses is rare, but is usually fatal=
. It
is caused by toxins produced by the bacteria known scientifically as
Clostridium <span class=3DSpellE>botulinum</span>. The botulism toxins act =
on the
peripheral nervous system by preventing transmission of the nervous impulse=
s.
These toxins are found in the soil and in decaying plant or animal matter.
Adult horses and foals usually less than eight months old can be affected.<=
o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DBasicParagraph style=3D'text-align:justify;mso-hyphenate:none'><=
span
style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;line-height:120%;letter-spacing:.1pt'><o:p>&nbsp;=
</o:p></span></p>

style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;line-height:120%'>Signs of botulism in horses are
inability to swallow, decreased eyelid and tail tone and dilated pupils, mu=
scle
weakness and tremors, and eventual collapse and respiratory paralysis. These
signs are similar to those of tetanus infection; the organisms are
&#8220;cousins.&#8221; If it is caught early enough, there is an antitoxin =
that
can improve survival chances. As well, there is a vaccine, but it is only r=
ecommended
for areas of the country where botulism is endemic. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

we often get stuck using the hay we&#8217;d avoided using all winter that m=

not be quite as clean as we&#8217;d wanted&#8230;. Avoid feeding moldy hay =
and
clean out the corners of your hay feeders where a winter&#8217;s worth of c=
haff
has accumulated and is decaying. Wrapped round bales are often the culprit =
as
well as dead or decaying animals can also contaminate feed.<o:p></o:p></spa=

trailers do not meet the sanitation requirements outlined on state agricult=
ure

of the placenta could in fact increase the incidence of retained fetal
membranes, hindering the mare&#8217;s immediate health (risk of infection a=
nd

</span>However, a study titled &#8220;The Effect of Manual Removal of Place=
nta
Immediately after Foaling on Subsequent Fertility Parameters in the Mare&#8=

published in the 2009 November issue of the Journal of Equine Veterinary

ane
and pulling gently, but<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>firml=

steadily until the placenta was fully removed taking care to avoid traction=
 on
the umbilical vessels.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Follow=
ing
foaling, mares were checked for a variety of conditions that would affect
fertility including uterine fluid at five and nine days post-foaling,
endometrial inflammation and infection, and pregnancy rates.<o:p></o:p></sp=
an></p>

<p class=3DBasicParagraph style=3D'text-align:justify;mso-hyphenate:none'><=

style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;line-height:120%;letter-spacing:-.25pt'>Results f=
ound
that manual placenta removal was not statistically significantly different =
than
natural expulsion for any of the fertility factors.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>In fact, four mares that were allo=
wed to
naturally expel the placenta resulted in retained placenta pieces, while ze=
ro
of the mares that had manual removal experienced retained placenta (the four
mares were not included in statistical analysis).<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Also, pregnancy rates on first ser=
vice
were actually higher for mares that underwent manual removal compared to
natural expulsion with 63% and 55% respectively.</span><span style=3D'font-=
