“cousins.” If it is caught early enough, there is an antitoxin =
that
can improve survival chances. As well, there is a vaccine, but it is only r=

more than 150 CHA instructors. Mitzi's
training and instruction encompass every facet of horses and horsemanship, =

Rider to Train Their Horse." Each horse and owner is treated with resp=

and as an individual. There is no "cookie cutter" approach to
teaching or training ─ each horse-rider combination is treated to an

domestic animal hauler and dealer licenses.

Resource’s Colleen Segarra, also the NYSHC
Humane Chair, was called to assist in the seizure of over 170 Thoroughbred =

at Centerbrook Farm in Climax, NY. Through the =

work of ERR, the evidence and testimony brought to court were crucial in the
conviction of the farm’s owner, Ernest Paragallo=
.
On May 18, 2010, ERR, Inc. was in attendance at the Greene County Court as =
the
judge handed down the maximum allowable sentence of 2 years in jail and a f=
ine
of $33,000. Immediately following sentencing, Paragall=
o
was handcuffed and removed from the court room to begin his incarceration. =
Centerbrook Farm has been shut down and Paragallo

foals, the common wisdom is to let the mare expel the placenta on her own.<=

published in the 2009 November issue of the Journal of Equine Veterinary

spontaneously expel the placenta.
Mares that remained lying down long enough for a veterinarian to ent=
er
the stall had the placenta manually removed by grasping the placental membr=
ane
and pulling gently, but firml=
y and
steadily until the placenta was fully removed taking care to avoid traction=
on
the umbilical vessels. Follow=
ing
foaling, mares were checked for a variety of conditions that would affect
fertility including uterine fluid at five and nine days post-foaling,
endometrial inflammation and infection, and pregnancy rates.

ound
that manual placenta removal was not statistically significantly different =
than
natural expulsion for any of the fertility factors. In fact, four mares that were allo=
wed to
naturally expel the placenta resulted in retained placenta pieces, while ze=
ro
of the mares that had manual removal experienced retained placenta (the four
mares were not included in statistical analysis). Also, pregnancy rates on first ser=
vice
were actually higher for mares that underwent manual removal compared to
natural expulsion with 63% and 55% respectively.

previous research suggesting manual placenta removal negatively impacts

save them another trip or waiting time to check that the placenta is in tac=
t.

there is still time for owners of active breeding stallions to participate.
USDA will pay the shipping and diagnostic laboratory testing costs for one =
set
of samples, if stallion owners will pay the costs

class=3DGramE>associated with collection of those samples by a USDA
accredited equine veterinarian. To participate, stallion owners need to get=
the
approval of the USDA-APHIS Area Veterinarian in Charge, or the State Animal
Health Official (e.g., State Veterinarian), for the State in which the stal=

is to be sampled.
