Dairy Research Facility

Blood testing equipment.
|
Miner Institute's Dairy Research Facility is equipped with:
- Surveillance cameras which are mounted within the dairy barn and used in collecting bahavioral data.
- A digital recorder and appropriate software for viewing and storing video data are located in the dairy barn laboratory.
- A high-speed centrifuge is located in the dairy barn laboratory. It is used for the separation of blood samples to facilitate harvesting of serum for analyses. A high-speed centrifuge used for the separation of milk samples for volatile fatty acid analyses is located in Miner Institute's lab complex.
- A small drying oven is used to determine the dry matter of TMR and orts samples.
- A small scale located in the dairy barn lab is used to weigh samples for the determination of the dry matter of TMR and orts samples.
- Several refrigerators and freezers are located in the dairy complex and used for the storage of collected samples.
- Fifty data loggers are used in collecting bahavioral data.
- HOBO data loggers are used to monitor environmental conditions in the barn.

Miner Center Laboratory Complex
|
Miner Institute's Laboratory Complex includes:
- Two large capacity ovens which are used to determine dry matter at either 55 degrees celcius or 105 degrees celcius.
- Two Ankom Fiber Analyzers can be found in the forage lab.
- A Penn State Particle Separator with sieves is used for particle size analysis of TMR and orts samples.
|
Miner Center houses both the forage and environmental laboratories. |
Members of the research staff are provided with personal computers and adequate software for
data management, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and presentation preparation.
