Forest Ecology and Management reinforces student understanding of basic ecological principles learned in General Ecology by gaining lecture and laboratory experiences in the ecology of forests. This course provides students opportunities to learn how ecology is applied to achieve sustainable forest management in the 21st century. Students practice “hands-on” forest mensuration skills through short-term and long-term lab exercises. A wide variety of study areas are used throughout the fall semester, including Lake Champlain lowland forests owned by Miner Institute and upper elevation forests in the Adirondacks.
Forest sampling sites include the jack pine barren and adjacent hardwood forests owned by Miner Institute, riparian areas along the Little Chazy River, the burned area on Noonmark Mountain and forests at Twin Valleys Outdoor Education Center. |
