research staff has spent the last several months conducting a nutrition stu=

with dry cows and early lactation cows. This type of study reminds us all of
the challenges that surround the transition period. A couple of our research
technicians had limited experience with fresh cows at the beginning of the
study. Their hard work and willingness to learn and ask questions has been
great. We have had several discussions focused on fresh cow health, physical
examinations, and causes of transition failures.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

class=3DSpellE>freestall</span> herds. The herds had a wide range of manage=
ment
practices, housing characteristics, and animal evaluations. Interestingly, 5
factors were associated with the herd average Transition Cow <span

university crop research results, something that has long bothered me is how
seldom the <i>cost</i> of a particular crop input is tied to its effectiven=
ess.
For example: In a university trial, Herbicide A provides 92% control of yel=
low
foxtail, while Herbicide B provides 90% control. However, Herbicide A costs=
 $30
per acre, while Herbicide B costs only $15. Which is your better alternativ=
e?
Will there be a corn yield difference between 92% and 90% foxtail control? I
think not, but you sure would notice the difference of $15 per acre! Some y=
ears
ago in attempting to control annual grasses in the corn at Miner Institute,=
 we
used a top-rated <span class=3DSpellE>postemergence</span> application of a
package mix of two herbicides. It did a good job, but in looking at the cost
&#8211; about $40 per acre when the adjuvant was included &#8211; we decide=
d to
try a somewhat cheaper alternative, finding that it too was very effective.=
 <o:p></o:p></span></p>

changes of some products. For instance, Monsanto is having a fire sale on
Roundup this year, pricing it at about 50% of what it cost last year. So any
cost comparison from 2009 involving Roundup (or most likely any other brand=
 of <br>
<span class=3DSpellE>glyphosate</span>) would be way out of whack in 2010. =

form. Not that this hasn't been attempted: A number of years ago one of the

thern</st1:City>
 <st1:State w:st=3D"on">NY</st1:State></st1:place> published a list of many=
 of
the commonly used herbicides and herbicide combinations, <i>including the
current retail price</i>. This was very useful, but of course was outdated =
by
the following spring. And it must have been enough work that I never saw an
updated version of this list.<span style=3D'letter-spacing:.25pt'><o:p></o:=
p></span></span></p>

variety trials at two or three Northern NY locations including one in Corne=

crop research area at Miner Institute. And each year &#8211; hot, cold, wet=

class=3DGramE>dry</span> &#8211; the Miner Institute trial provides big yie=
lds.
This year the trials, consisting of 14 Roundup Ready Group I varieties plan=
ted
on May 29th, averaged 57 bushels/acre. Just about everything yielded well; =
with
the exception of one variety that yielded 51 <span class=3DSpellE>bu</span>=
/A,
there wasn't anything that was less than 55 <span class=3DSpellE>bu</span>/=
A with
the top three all 60 <span class=3DSpellE>bu</span>/<span class=3DGramE>A o=
r</span>
higher. It was encouraging that even though the trial wasn't harvested until
Nov. 2 there was no lodging at all. A similar trial at <st1:PlaceName w:st=
=3D"on">Sackets</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st=3D"on">Harbor</st1:PlaceType> (near <st1:City w:st=3D"o=
n"><st1:place

breakdowns in proper feeding management before going to the expense of <span
class=3DSpellE>mycotoxin</span> testing. <span class=3DSpellE>Vomitoxin</sp=
an>
(DON) is the most commonly reported <span class=3DSpellE>mycotoxin</span> in
forages grown in the Northeast.&nbsp;In ruminants it doesn&#8217;t cause
specific disease symptoms but reduces the palatability of feed and therefore
reduces dry matter intake (DMI). In this year with such poor climate condit=
ions
for harvest, monthly testing of forages is recommended to stay ahead of <sp=
an
class=3DSpellE>mycotoxin</span> problems.&nbsp;Of course there are a myriad=
 of
reasons for DMI to be reduced. Before just throwing an expensive feed addit=
ive
into the ration, Drs. <span class=3DSpellE>Haladi</span> and <span class=3D=
SpellE>Zanzalari</span>
recommend reviewing other causes of diminished DMI, such as inaccurate mois=
ture
content of the ration and overcrowding of the feed bunk with the herd feed =
rep
and/or herd veterinarian.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-align:justify'><span lang=3DEN style=3D'=
font-size:
11.0pt;mso-ansi-language:EN'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p>

DON, specific symptoms are associated with this <span class=3DSpellE>mycoto=
xin</span>
in dairy cattle. <span class=3DSpellE>Zealerone</span> mimics estrogen&#821=
7;s
effect on the dairy cow&#8217;s reproductive system and has been associated
with poor conception rate in cattle that exhibit abnormal estrus
activity.&nbsp;Cows display increased vaginal secretion and swelling and
heifers may exhibit abnormal mammary enlargement.&nbsp;There are many cause=
s of
abortion, early embryonic death, and irregular cycling in dairy cows that m=
ust
be eliminated before placing the blame on <span class=3DSpellE>mycotoxin</s=
pan>.&nbsp;
<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-align:justify'><span lang=3DEN style=3D'=

class=3DSpellE>mycotoxins</span> found in the Northeast, but that doesn&#82=

mean that other <span class=3DSpellE>mycotoxins</span> can not be in your
dairy&#8217;s rations because grains imported from the <st1:place w:st=3D"o=
n">Midwest</st1:place>
could contain significant levels of <span class=3DSpellE>aflatoxin</span> a=
nd <span
class=3DSpellE>fumonisin</span>. These <span class=3DSpellE>mycotoxins</spa=
n> will
be concentrated 3X during the ethanol production process and therefore be m=
ore
concentrated in distiller&#8217;s grains. Local grain companies regularly t=
est
loads for these contaminants. Ruminants can handle a low level, but there is
increased danger this year.&nbsp;<span class=3DSpellE>Aflatoxin</span> is
associated with cottonseed and can be transmitted through the milk to human=
s.
In humans it can cause liver cancer so it&#8217;s tested for at the milk pl=
ant
in Midwestern states.&nbsp; <span class=3DSpellE>Fumonsin</span> is a commo=
n <span
class=3DSpellE>mycotoxin</span> in the <st1:place w:st=3D"on">Midwest</st1:=
place>
that causes poor appetite and diarrhea in dairy cattle.&nbsp; It&#8217;s
suspected to be one of the causative agents in the emerging disease syndrom=
e,
Hemorrhagic Bowel Syndrome.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

nce?</span>
Nope, according to EU policy makers, the ban wasn't based on any scientific
knowledge but simply because <span class=3DSpellE>atrazine</span> is so wid=
ely
used by European farmers that <i>it might cause problems someday</i>. <o:p>=
</o:p></span></p>

perhaps the EU should also ban the consumption of lettuce; it's never caused
any problems and has been eaten for generations but, well, you never

class=3DGramE>do</span> <st1:country-region w:st=3D"on"><st1:place w:st=3D"=
on">U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region>
weed scientists view <span class=3DSpellE>atrazine</span>? Here's a quote (=
from a
couple of years ago) from a weed scientist at a state agricultural college,
referring to weed control in corn: &quot;It doesn&#8217;t really matter whi=
ch
herbicide you use as long as it contains <span class=3DSpellE>atrazine</spa=
n>.&quot;<o:p></o:p></span></p>

full disclosure, EPA recently announced plans for yet another review of <sp=

regulatory study that concluded that <span class=3DSpellE>atrazine</span> is
unlikely to cause cancer in humans and doesn&#8217;t affect the reproductive
development of frogs and other amphibians. EPA has been studying <span
class=3DSpellE>atrazine</span> for about 20 years and hasn&#8217;t found any
&#8221;smoking gun&#8221; so to speak, but environmental activists continue=
 to
hound EPA about this highly popular herbicide.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

world,&#8221; evaluate our cows and farm management with a fresh eye, and
provide the services we need to continue operation.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span=

must perform like a well-oiled machine, everyone doing their very best at t=

job and contributing to the successful operation of our dairy farm. <span

estimates that ASB can cause a 20 to 30% increase in feed costs in some cas=

due to reductions in yield and quality, certainly something that no dairy f=
arm
can afford.<span

Malone, and along Lake Champlain north of <st1:City w:st=3D"on"><st1:place =
w:st=3D"on">Plattsburgh</st1:place></st1:City>.
No evidence of ASB has been found yet at Miner Institute, but the recent
discovery of ASB in the area should get the attention of alfalfa growers. T=
he
adult ASB can hitch rides on farm implements, beehives, and other equipment,
making containment difficult. Since all ASB adults are females, it only tak=
es
one to start an infestation as they lay between 300 and 1,000 eggs.<span

inability to manage them with insecticides makes control difficult. The real
damage is caused by larvae. Adults are on the move in April and lay eggs in
June. Larvae migrate to depths of one to two feet in the soil and feed on r=
oots
until they pupate the second year. Damage by ASB should not be confused with
winter kill. The best time to look for ASB damage is generally in late Octo=
ber.
The picture of alfalfa damage above right was taken in the third week of
October before 4<sup>th</sup> cutting and was easily distinguishable from t=
he
unaffected portions of the field in the background. ASB is typically found =
in
well drained soils where the seasonally high water table is deeper in the
ground. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

 at
Cornell has shown that <span class=3DSpellE>biocontrol</span> of ASB may be
possible by inoculating soils with <span class=3DSpellE>entomopathogenic</s=
pan>
nematodes, which prey specifically on ASB and other soil insects. Nematodes=
 are
cultured, added to water, and applied with sprayers at a rate of 1 billion/=
acre
for a cost of about $200/acre. Shields <br>
recently demonstrated that nematodes persisted for seven years at one site,
while ASB populations stayed at manageable levels compared to no treatment.
Shields also works with Dr. Don Viands at Cornell on developing ASB resista=
nt
alfalfa. The Shields lab has screened hundreds of thousands of plants and
Viands performs the selection and cross breeding. <span class=3DGramE>Shiel=
ds
believes</span> that both alfalfa resistance and <span class=3DSpellE>bioco=
ntrol</span>
will be required for effective ASB control. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

economic damage. However, the percentages increase to 50 to 70 percent for
third year corn and 80 to 100 percent for fourth year and beyond. Put anoth=
er
way, if you do nothing your chance of incurring significant rootworm proble=
ms
are approximately one in three for the second year of corn production, two =
in
three for the third year, and almost certain in the fourth year and later.<=

cows were not lame (locomotion scores of 1 or 2) and only 0.5% were severely

or against a wall, were less likely to result in the development of lesions=

later lactation? Two of the primary reasons to feed these two groups differ=

lactation gain excess body condition, they are at increased risk of develop=
ing
metabolic and reproductive problems in the subsequent lactation. Use of <sp=

animals, which has allowed for relative success of feeding a one group TMR =
to
the lactating herd. However, because many herds are not using <span
