using the same lab each year you can make your soil analyses a moving pictu=

lbs
per acre on the Cornell soil test. However, what a single soil analysis
doesn’t tell you is whether that’s 1=

fertilizer dealer’s unbiased (?) recommendation, or “What Dad

the same lab (at least one soil test every 3 years is required by CAFO plans
and is a good idea anyway), you can tell in which direction soil fertility =
is

million pounds of soil! But if, for instance, potassium levels on your farm=

reason to save old analyses is when a strange number pops up on your latest
soil analysis. For example: Soil pH was 7.0 for the prior two soil tests, b=

sampling or (much less frequently) lab error? If you have prior soil analys=
es
on this field that show a high pH, you might do another pH test rather than
spread 2 tons/A of lime on the field. Stuff like this really happens: The pH
tests over a 12-year period on one of Miner Institute’s fields are 7.=
0--7.2--6.9--6.6--7.3--7.3.
The year that the pH test was 6.6, Cornell’s recommendation was to ap=
ply
1 ton of lime per acre. We didn’t apply any lime, and judging from the
two following pH tests it’s a good thing we didn’t! Soil test K=

bounce around from test to test because crop removal of this nutrient can be
very high. However, soil pH and soil test P don’t change much from ye=
